Shoddy DBSS projects puzzling

I refer to the report, “HDB urged to do more following defects in DBSS, BTO projects” (July 14).

As an owner of one of the first Design, Build and Sell Scheme (DBSS) flats, I am puzzled to hear time and again of the complaints about defects in newer DBSS flats and Executive Condominiums, which warrant monetary compensation in some instances.

The bottom line should not be the only concern, and I do not understand why some developers with erstwhile good track records could produce substandard DBSS projects, and yet proceed to develop more projects in the private market.

The class of homeowners the DBSS caters to, I can safely say, would rather pay a premium for a home that does not spring unpleasant surprises within months than for developers to keep costs low, sacrificing quality in the end.

As one who must bear with poor finishings in her flat, I would ask decision makers if they would live in these homes they had a hand in developing. Many people have indeed made their homes in DBSS projects, and I venture to say that I will be among the unhappy ones in our project who will move out after the minimum occupation period because we feel short-changed.
