HK protests are a puzzle, given China’s current regime

Was universal suffrage ever practised in Hong Kong in more than 150 years of colonial rule? And now, have the Hong Kong people been treated differently by China despite the one-government-two-systems regime?

Hong Kong is part of China. It shall revert to complete Chinese control in about 33 years’ time.

Creating unnecessary problems to confront the mainland authorities now by disrupting peace, daily business and the normal way of life in the territory is puzzling. Total self-rule is but an impossible dream in the light of the prevailing Chinese regime.

A long occupation of the financial centres and other areas by the students and self-interested parties could end up hurting Hong Kong and the livelihood of the majority of its people. Does that represent a rightful expression of true democracy?

Given time, China could evolve and improve its system of government gradually, based on the needs of its vast population as their overall standard of living is enhanced further.
