How childcare operators can help low-income parents who work late

Besides the recommendations made in the article “Educators flag absentee rate of children of low-income families as a concern” (Aug 1), I would propose that childcare operators, especially the anchor operators, consider two more suggestions.

One is to extend the closing time to 7.30pm. Second, in the event of a centre closure, parents whose children are receiving financial assistance should be offered an alternative centre nearby, run by the same operator, where they can send their children.

Parents holding jobs that require them to end late or do shift work would be able to pick up their children after work without having to make alternative arrangements.
