Huge potential for technology to help people manage health better

We were pleased to see the importance of diabetes management getting top billing at the National Day Rally (‘Invisible disease’ a serious problem in Singapore; Aug 21).

Chronic diseases are among the biggest threats to our nation’s health in the coming decade, and we share the Prime Minister’s view that prevention is more important than cure in tackling them.

Our recent Future Health Index study suggests that technology will be a key to achieving the goal of getting more Singaporeans to take responsibility for their own health in years to come.

Our research also finds that Singaporeans and healthcare professionals here are not using health technologies, such as health-related trackers, wearables, home health-monitoring devices, live electronic communication with doctors and remote patient monitoring, as much as they could be.

More than a third of those we surveyed said they were not knowledgeable about the medical technologies available to them, for example.

It is important that the Smart Nation drive Singapore embraces for a digital future extends to our healthcare sector.

At Philips, we see huge potential in the use of technology to help people to manage their health better, but more education is needed to achieve this.
