Impose fee for nomination forms

It irks me to read that those few familiar faces have again gone to the Elections Department to obtain nomination forms (“Parties, candidates descend on Elections Department to collect nomination forms”: Aug 27).

It irks me to read that those few familiar faces have again gone to the Elections Department to obtain nomination forms (“Parties, candidates descend on Elections Department to collect nomination forms”: Aug 27).

Both Mr Ooi Boon Ewe and Mr Zeng Guoyuan are not serious about running in our national elections; the latter may not even qualify.

It is time the Elections Department impose a fee for the collection of these forms to deter such potential candidates. This should be more feasible now, since the election deposit has been lowered to $14,500 from $16,000 in 2011.

Also, our local media needs to stop giving them coverage. There should be a stamp of solemnity and respect for our General Election as well as Presidential Election.
