The Republic of Singapore Air Force recently concluded Exercise Torrent, which uses Lim Chu Kang Road as an extra runway for military aircraft (“Thunder road: RSAF’s confidence in defending airspace gets boost”; Nov 14).

The exercise has been in existence for 30 years, so I am surprised at the slow preparation time to remove lamp posts and bus-stop shelters. Furthermore, this work was done by contractors, mainly foreign labourers.

Although the RSAF has assured us that its personnel will perform the work in times of emergency, it is better to start using our personnel in peacetime, to get them familiar with and ready for the co-ordination needed.

Besides this, perhaps we should look at improvements in the design of the lamp posts, for instance, so that they can be removed rapidly and with less manpower.

Alternatively, they could be located further from the road so that they need not be removed. Also, modular bus stops could be used, to aid in their removal.
