Indonesia should act like good neighbour in tackling haze

I would have thought that in the spirit of the Association of South-east Asian Nations, and as a good neighbour, Indonesia would show care for people in the region and take joint steps to bring the culprits to task.

Instead, it places obstacles to Singapore’s attempts to do so according to our laws, and admonishes us.

As much as we respect that Indonesia, as a sovereign country, is at liberty to make its own laws, the same respect must be accorded to its neighbours (“S’pore’s efforts to tackle haze culprits ‘not about national sovereignty’”; June 16).

I hope that Indonesia’s disjointed efforts with her neighbours do not create a loophole for the culprits causing the fires to escape the brunt of the law.
