First, not many people can afford cars. With prices the way they are, it can be well-nigh impossible, and the car population has shrunk.

Second, for car owners to make the switch, the efficiency and reliability of public transport must improve progressively. In this aspect, the Government has shown their commitment in recent Budgets.

Fewer breakdowns, more frequent and timely services, more MRT stations and bus-stops at strategic locations as well as better taxi and private-hire services — but not more transport subsidies — would go a long way towards making Singapore car-lite.
