Initiatives such as student carpooling worth supporting

It was great to read the report “Overwhelming response to new Uber-like service for schoolchildren” (Oct 17). The service is a timely and much-needed one in Singapore, and I applaud the Tehs for coming up with this entrepreneurial idea.

It was great to read the report “Overwhelming response to new Uber-like service for schoolchildren” (Oct 17). The service is a timely and much-needed one in Singapore, and I applaud the Tehs for coming up with this entrepreneurial idea.

The congestion outside schools, especially in the mornings, when there is office-going traffic too, can be chaotic.

Schools have been dealing with this problem by sending reminders time and again to motorists dropping off their children to adhere to the school and traffic rules. But the situation remains the same.

I drop my child off every morning by public transport, as I do not own a car. However, I would love to use this carpooling service for schoolchildren, as I find the idea appealing and time-saving.

Moreover, as the Tehs pointed out, it gives the children more time for sleep. That is why I feel this service would be more beneficial to secondary schoolchildren here, who are often deprived of sleep.

The service is also a good option for younger children who wake up at unearthly hours to catch their school bus, reducing their sleep time considerably.

I would rather spend money on such a service than compromise on my child’s health.

And as we move towards a car-lite and environmentally friendly Singapore, I hope more parents support such initiatives.
