As reported, SMRT has been fined S$5.4 million for the train disruption on July 7. The number of commuters affected was estimated to be around 413,000 (“SMRT to be fined S$5.4m for July 7 disruption”; Sept 24).

This works out to be about S$13 per commuter, which is about seven days of MRT fares paid by an average commuter.

As the fine collected by LTA will not go towards compensating the affected commuters, may I suggest that instead of collecting a fine, the operator be required to run the affected lines for free for a period of, say, seven days.

If not all the stations of the line were affected, then only those affected would not collect fares. With computers managing the ticket gates, this can be implemented.
