Jurong Bird Park holds Singaporeans’ shared memories

I am in favour of leaving Mandai’s forested area intact, as it could be one of the last few “wilderness” areas in Singapore. (“Mandai area should remain untouched for our next generation”: Sept 15)

Its pristine, rustic and rugged charm is surely close to the hearts of nature lovers here, as we have enough man-made natural environments.

As for Jurong Bird Park, many middle-aged Singaporeans have common childhood memories of visiting it, one of the few places of interest for class outings during our schooldays.

What would be left of our memories of Singapore if places of heritage value are gradually removed or relocated?

We should not get too carried away by the notion of change or redevelopment for a better future. We should instead value and preserve certain good things we have, so as to foster our sense of rootedness and belonging to the nation.
