The report “Keppel Club assisting police with probe into ‘phantom’ memberships” (Dec 19) stated that the club’s management has broken its silence about the issue of about 1,000 “phantom” memberships. But the silence remains no less deafening.

Club members are not the general public, who can wait patiently for the results of the investigation, which could possibly take months.

A club’s principal stakeholders have the right to fuller disclosure promptly.

The club has urged members to be discreet when talking to outside parties to “avoid any undesired effect on the club’s image and reputation”.

On the back of the club’s failure to fruitfully resolve its future after its lease expires in 2021, the scope of the reported fraud has to be the last straw.

Confidence in the club’s management is in the doldrums, and the marketability and value of the club’s membership are suffering.

What a further shroud of secrecy can conceivably shield for the time being, if at all, is the credibility of the club management, as well as its systems of corporate governance, administration and accounting.

As a member, I expect, as many others do, the club to urgently convene a members-only meeting to brief us on factual information that does not compromise the ongoing, external investigation and on the efforts being made to limit damage.

There are many questions on our minds, not least of which is the preservation of our membership value.
