The Manpower Ministry should seriously consider such a move as our population ages.

The statutory minimum retirement age is now 62. Employers have to offer re-employment to the age of 65 if the employee is hale and hearty.

Some jobs are unsuitable for those above a certain age. On the other hand, a doctor in a clinic could well work until the age of 75, if he is still healthy.

There should indeed be a compulsory health check for all workers once in five years, and for those above the age of 70, every two years.

The Traffic Police stipulates that motorists aged 65 and older should undergo a medical check every three years, which is a wise move. Similarly, a person could work as long as he is certified medically fit for work.

The idea of a fixed retirement age should be jettisoned as soon as possible.
