The likes of Peter Lim help realise S’pore’s Vision 2030

It is exciting to read about former remisier king Peter Lim putting Singapore on the map with his foray into European football vis-a-vis his investments in Valencia CF (“Billionaire Peter Lim injects S$159.2m into Spanish club Valencia”; Oct 2).

It is exciting to read about former remisier king Peter Lim putting Singapore on the map with his foray into European football vis-a-vis his investments in Valencia CF (“Billionaire Peter Lim injects S$159.2m into Spanish club Valencia”; Oct 2).

Under his leadership, Valencia CF have opened their first overseas office here, at Great World City, to raise their regional brand awareness with Singapore as the epicentre, and work with local football organisations to raise the standard of play here.

This aligns with Singapore’s vision of being an international sports hub and with the Vision 2030 strategy, spearheaded by Sport Singapore and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth to empower Singaporeans to live better through sports’ impactful experience.

Until financial troubles weighed in, Valencia CF were European football heavyweights, having won the Spanish La Liga six times, the UEFA Cup once and finishing as UEFA Champions League runners-up in 2000 and 2001.

Mr Lim demonstrated astute investment foresight in identifying the club as a value buy. Coupled with his commitment to the sport, Valencia CF are back to winning ways and back in the UEFA Champions League, which will undoubtedly pay dividends.

This has caught the attention of football fans worldwide and rubbed off positively on Singapore.

Probably, what not many people are aware of is his investment in Northern Premier League semi-professional side Salford City FC, together with Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs and a few others.

Interestingly, the club’s colour is red and the logo is a lion’s head, which are both reminiscent of Singapore as the Lion City.

I hope there will be more Singaporean companies and businessmen such as Mr Lim and his team at Meriton Holdings to promote Singapore in the sporting world, do more for sports here and help bring Vision 2030 to fruition.
