I refer to the report “New police vocation: Teaching the public how to deal with terror attacks” (May 16).

It is heartening to see the Singapore Police Force putting full effort into training its officers to engage the public on the threat of terrorism and how to handle it.

I also agree with Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam that it takes the community to respond quickly to terrorism-related issues.

As our community spirit grows stronger, this means we are less vulnerable to attacks, as there is less room for terrorists to exploit. A low chance, however, does not mean no chance.

As much as it is easier to strengthen our community spirit as a good start on managing these issues, it is gruelling to tackle self-radicalisation and to change the terrorist mindset and the cyber landscape.

Change cannot occur in the short term. We need further research and analysis of these people’s wrongdoings and wrong perspective on handling issues. Only then can we eradicate most terror attacks.
