Make cyber defence part of NS training for all servicemen
I refer to the commentary “The evolution of NS and its relevance to Singapore” (March 14).
I refer to the commentary “The evolution of NS and its relevance to Singapore” (March 14).
As a national serviceman now at a local university, I believe in the importance of National Service in ensuring that Singapore has an adequate defence force.
The creation of the Committee to Strengthen National Service is a good way to pique young Singaporeans’ interest in serving NS. As our society evolves, so do the ways of keeping NS relevant.
I also agree on the need to increase Singapore’s defence against cyber attacks owing to the rising threat.
One of the new ways to strengthen the relevance of NS is thus to train soldiers in skills that can help with this defence during their two years of NS.
For example, basic cyber defence training can be conducted even during Basic Military Training. Such skills can complement soldiers’ physical training.
This would ensure that they are all trained to defend Singapore on both the physical and cyber fronts.
As technology advances, so will the need for various types of NS training.
