For many, love of learning is reason enough to pursue a degree

Whether it is a skill or a degree that can land one a high-paying or dream job, there are always those who would pursue a degree for the love of learning and out of the desire for self-actualisation. Some even hope that the rigours of the course can stretch their minds. If the degree helps to land them the ideal job, it is a bonus.

I agree with psychologist Abraham Maslow that “what a man can be, he must be” and that every person desires to reach the highest level in his “hierarchy of needs” model.

Hence we often read about older people and retirees going back to school to take up degree or diploma courses. Some even do multiple courses and attain different degrees.

When I was a schoolteacher, we were sometimes reminded to instil a love of learning in pupils, for the sake of learning and not merely for passing examinations. Nowadays, we also advocate lifelong learning.

This desire and ability to keep learning will keep one afloat in a sea of change, which is today’s world.

In any case, university education these days is not all about books.

Project work, open-book exams and group presentations inculcate useful skills such as adaptability, independent learning and ability to work in teams, which will stand graduates in good stead in the working world.

So let us not dissuade the young from pursuing degrees if they desire to do so. Let us not kill their love, or thirst, for knowledge.

Let us help as many of them as possible to realise their dreams, whether in academic pursuits or otherwise.
