Middle East conflicts due to greed, desire for profit, selfishness

I refer to the letters “Israel must learn to live with its neighbours” (Jan 9) and “Not feasible to solve Middle East crisis by UN resolution” (Jan 16), in which the writers gave insightful analyses and reviews of the longstanding antagonism, conflict and war between Israel and Arab nations.

I refer to the letters “Israel must learn to live with its neighbours” (Jan 9) and “Not feasible to solve Middle East crisis by UN resolution” (Jan 16), in which the writers gave insightful analyses and reviews of the longstanding antagonism, conflict and war between Israel and Arab nations.

Any form of military confrontation, whether for the sake of survival or justice, has boiled down to greed, selfishness and the craving for profit, among other things.

Hence, it is not surprising to see that the United Nations has been unable to hold any peace for long over the years, and no long-term solution or resolution has been forged.

The leaders of Israel and the Arab nations must recognise that the cruel destruction brought about by war would bring only suffering and misfortune to their people.

They need to foster mutual respect and trust, and recognise Israel’s right to survival and dignity.
