More disabled-friendly steps, railings at public pools needed

I read with interest the report “‘No regrets despite losing election’” (Oct 6).
The new Singapore Disability Sports Council chief, Mr Kevin Wong, said: “SDSC should not only support elite athletes but also actively engage and encourage the wider spectrum of individuals with disability to take up sports as a form of rehabilitation and therapy.”
I suffer from arthritis and have had hip replacement surgery. Doctors have recommended swimming as good exercise for me.
But I find it difficult to climb up and down the metal steps in and out of public swimming pools.
I have contacted Sport Singapore, which informed me that it is looking to install more disabled-friendly steps and railings at the Woodlands public pool near my residence. That was in March, and I am still awaiting these.
It would be good if the relevant authorities and Mr Wong could look into more user-friendly access for the spectrum of disabled individuals to get in and out of public pools, so that swimming could be a therapy for us.
Frankly speaking, climbing the steps in public pools is quite formidable for the many individuals who are frail, elderly, overweight and/or disabled.
