More statistics required on smoking issue

I refer to the report “Designated smoking points a win-win for Nee Soon South residents: MP” (Jan 23).

There is no reason to not extend designated smoking points to the wider public, as this would reduce secondary smoke and create a healthier population. While the current laws are sufficient, enforcement has not been so.

A simple study of smoking near bus stops, for example, would provide the number smokers who stand less than a metre away. A lack of feedback does not mean the issue is not prevalent.

I, for one, did not know we could contact our Member of Parliament for smoking issues. I live in Mr Patrick Tay’s ward, and at least one neighbour living above, below or beside me smokes.

I breathe in secondary smoke nightly, even though my family does not smoke. The smell usually pervades the lift too. How can we prevent our neighbours from smoking?

I also encounter at least two to three smokers on the way to work. They smoke in open corridors before throwing the butts into the drains and grass.

Statistics on the smoking population, as well as interviews with non-smokers, would offer a fair gauge of the situation, compared with receiving second-hand insights from MPs.
