There is no one answer to the question “Too much homework and tuition?” (Talking Point).

Every child is different. A child also grows through various stages of his or her life. As a child grows, his or her needs change.

There is no one way of teaching our children. The point of having homework and tuition is for guidance, for the purpose of teaching. What fits a child’s needs today may not be the same as he or she progresses.

Parents, teachers and mentors cannot emphasise academic pursuit only. There is more to a child’s life than school, homework and tuition. Above all, we should not forget love and nurturing, which take time.

However, time is what many parents lack in today’s demanding world, due to work or other commitments. But one has to make time.

Parents would be a child’s best tutors and would know what is best for each of their children. If one spends time and really notices one’s children, one would know what they need, despite what society dictates.

On a related matter, some parents forget several of their children’s needs, such as proper healthy meals, 10 to 14 hours of sleep and exposure to nature and outdoor activities.

Perhaps, if we give them all that, our children would perform well in both school and life, and the reliance on homework and tuition can be reduced or even eliminated.
