Nathan exemplified qualities we seek in S’pore’s President

Since our independence, we have had Presidents of different races who have had different careers.

Since our independence, we have had Presidents of different races who have had different careers.

Mr Yusof Ishak and Mr Wee Kim Wee were journalists; Dr Benjamin Sheares was an obstetrician and gynaecologist; Messrs Devan Nair, Ong Teng Cheong and S R Nathan were National Trades Union Congress leaders.

They came from humble beginnings, and were viewed as friendly people. Their hospitality during Istana open houses was appreciated by people from all walks of life. Those who have visited the Istana have enjoyed memorable encounters.

It is significant that the President’s and First Lady’s photos are hung in schools and government buildings as they remind us that he is the head of state.

Our Presidents’ decisions are important and affect everyone. Their contributions have had an impact on our country. They represent one nation and one Singapore, and they have led a life of integrity, resilience, and service to Singaporeans.

Our people’s respect is evident during the National Day Parade, when they stand as the President passes by in his ceremonial vehicle.

As our Presidential Election is next year, I hope we will choose wisely, regardless of race, language or religion.

Our next President must be fearless and firm in his decision-making as Mr Nathan was, not affording clemency to murderers and drug traffickers in his 12 years of service as head of state.
