New Tekka liquor rule discriminates against foreign workers

I refer to the letter “Prevention better than cure in Tekka liquor rule” (Aug 3).

I refer to the letter “Prevention better than cure in Tekka liquor rule” (Aug 3).

The issue here is that there were large groups of drinkers at Tekka Food Centre, which resulted in rowdy behaviour and difficulty in getting a seat there. The latest liquor curbs may not be much of a solution, however, as people would now go earlier to drink and pose the same problems.

Moreover, the curbs have been implemented only at this food centre in Little India, which seems discriminatory. While some foreign workers might be rowdy after consuming alcohol, the same goes for some Singaporeans.

Does that mean the curbs should be implemented throughout the whole of Singapore? The foreign workers drink there on Sundays and should be allowed an evening to unwind after a long week of work. This treatment of them is upsetting.

Security on Sunday nights could have been increased instead, through police patrols, surveillance cameras and warnings printed around Tekka. People could also talk to them about being considerate.

Surely, as humans, they would understand, and only a handful may not follow the law.

It is unfair to stereotype them because of one major incident three years ago. The curbs are also bad for the hawkers’ livelihood.

I hope there will be open discussions about this matter, as it affects people living in Singapore.
