The National Library Board should consider opening a few libraries around the clock, perhaps starting with the one at Orchard Road and maybe opening one at Changi Airport.

There are several advantages in doing so.

There are Singaporeans who may like to unwind after work by reading, or use public transport later than others to avoid the rush.

There may also be first-time tourists who touch down in Singapore in the wee hours, and want to read a little about Singapore’s attractions and culture to decide on their itinerary.

These library branches can also serve as business centres for business travellers who need to do urgent video conferencing or emailing at non-working hours.

Keeping libraries open around the clock can also be a source of part-time income for Singaporean retirees who have a large treasure trove of local knowledge to share.

It is time to further improve and broaden how we view libraries.
