We refer to Mr Peter Miller’s letter, “Need for tougher action against illegal sex trade” (April 7).

Singapore does not condone human trafficking and takes action against any perpetrator of this crime. The Singapore Inter-Agency Taskforce on Trafficking-in-Persons (TIP) was set up to coordinate whole-of-government efforts and strategies to combat TIP holistically.

Prostitution is not an offence in Singapore and not all persons involved in prostitution are victims of trafficking. However, the authorities will not hesitate to act against traffickers who deceive and exploit victims to engage in prostitution-related activities.

It is illegal to solicit and import women for the purpose of prostitution and live off the proceeds of prostitution.

To tackle sex trafficking, the police have set up a dedicated team where officers are trained to investigate such cases and look out for potential victims during their vice-related raids.

If Mr Miller has specific information on sex-trafficking cases here, we welcome him to share these with the police.
