We have just celebrated 50 years of independence as a multiracial society and should be more confident in identifying ourselves as Singaporeans without the constant need to refer to our ethnic origin.
So, Colonel Zakir Hamid should be portrayed as a model Singaporean worthy of emulating. Our Government and media should set the example by publicising role models without ethnic reference.
The Singaporean public are now more discerning when they access the media. There is no need to state the obvious and run the risk of being at best patronising or at worst stereotyping.
