Older workers can impart knowledge, skills to young ones

Why do employers shy away from employing older people who are healthy and energetic? We have a wealth of practical knowledge. We can groom younger employees to be streetwise and motivate them to deal with and overcome complex issues.

I am a 64-year-old logistics professional with more than 40 years’ experience. I have returned to Singapore after an eight-year stint in China and it has been difficult to find employment despite the openings.

The reason mostly given is that I am overqualified. I believe the real reason is age, not the money. The possible concerns are health and length of service to the company.

If it is health, a medical check can be a prerequisite.

If it is length of service, I believe the older generation’s objective is to pass on their skills.

Besides, older workers tend to be more loyal and stay longer.
