Paralympic rewards: Key is to motivate local talent

So the nagging question for all of us is how do we recognise and reward para-swimmers Yip Pin Xiu and Theresa Goh for their achievements (“I’m racing for equality, not money: Yip”; Sept 17).

So the nagging question for all of us is how do we recognise and reward para-swimmers Yip Pin Xiu and Theresa Goh for their achievements (“I’m racing for equality, not money: Yip”; Sept 17).

India and Malaysia (which give the same rewards to their Olympic and Paralympic medallists) should be emulated, to retain talent and continue encouraging active citizenry.

Motivating Singaporean talents and sustaining their interest is more important, however, than the monetary reward itself. With the emphasis on educational results and making more money, talent is scarce here.

Special thanks must be accorded to the para-swimmers’ parents for their support and love, and to their coaches, Mick Massey in particular, for producing stars who will go down in history in the sporting fraternity.
