Police have a duty to act on calls about suspicious behaviour

We refer to the letter “Should couple be faulted for calling police?” (May 13).

We refer to the letter “Should couple be faulted for calling police?” (May 13).

The police have a duty to respond to calls reporting suspicious behaviour in public places. On May 7, the police responded to a call about a person who was pulling at the door handles of parked cars near Bishan Park.

After the police established that he was a youth with special needs and assessed that he posed no harm to the public, the police contacted his mother. The youth was handed over to his guardian after he arrived.

The police handled the special-needs youth in an appropriate manner. The police have also clarified their actions with his mother and consider the matter closed. We thank the public for partnering us in keeping Singapore safe.
