Police notices at crime scenes may help attract more witnesses

I refer to the report “Police camera footage helped solve over 1,600 cases” (Feb 11).

Last year, my bicycle seat and suspension were stolen from Tanah Merah MRT Station. The matter was reported to the police.

It took a number of email enquiries and weeks for the officer to follow up.

I was told that the culprit was seen “clearly” on the surveillance video. I was also told that an image of the person was put up on the Singapore Police Force website, and it was.

The thing is, I wonder how many people would browse through the website to see how they can help the police solve cases?

Not many people would have the time or know where to go unless they are given the specific online link.

I would suggest that a police notice with the image be put up at the location where the reported crime took place, soon after the matter is reported — in the same way police place signs appealing for witnesses of fatal accidents or shop thefts, for example.

I am not sure now how many other bicycle parts might have been stolen at the MRT station as the culprit gets away with his crime scot-free.
