Pride in ethnicity does not hinder loyalty to Singapore

I refer to the commentary “Move beyond identifying S’poreans based on ethnicity” (Nov 7).

I disagree that strengthening the shared identity and diversity of our respective ethnic groups’ characteristics, culture, language and religion contradicts the assimilation of new immigrants into Singapore’s multicultural, multilingual and multi-religious society.

Furthermore, a Singaporean of any ethnicity who takes pride in his culture is no less loyal to the country or contributing any less to the building and progress of the nation.

In fact, his instinct is probably to feel proud to be Singaporean and to do his best. Singapore society has a unique multiracialism that was not built overnight. Government policies and efforts to build a conducive environment for immigrants should be commended.
