Provide affordable homes for elderly

When I heard about the prices for The Hillford, a retirement housing project for the elderly, I thought to myself that it is meant only for rich retirees. Even retirement housing does not come cheap.

When I heard about the prices for The Hillford, a retirement housing project for the elderly, I thought to myself that it is meant only for rich retirees. Even retirement housing does not come cheap.

Where does that leave the rest of the elderly? The next available choice is a public studio apartment, but this is not getting any cheaper.

Some time last year, a friend of mine bought a studio apartment for S$90,000. Three months later, her friend bought a similar unit and the price had risen. Studio apartments should be kept affordable if the elderly are to afford these.

The elderly are not asking for an exclusive, condominium-style retirement place like The Hillford. But some Western countries have moved to provide retirement homes with facilities, and Singapore should provide affordable ones for our ageing population too.
