Provide raw water for non-drinking purposes

Singapore’s water levels have not reached crisis point, but the debate on the pending price increase has been a watershed (“Price hike debate should remind S’poreans of water’s importance: PM”; March 3).

As a long-term measure to save treated water, perhaps raw water from Singapore’s reservoirs and Johor should be piped for general-purpose use, like flushing toilets and cleaning premises.

Then, treated water such as for drinking and cooking can be made more expensive and no one would need to complain, as this constitutes a smaller fraction of the water used.

Singapore’s treated water, which can be drunk from the tap, is wasted for general-purpose use.
