Public education key to bike-sharing’s success
I read with interest the report “Chinese firm Mobike enters S’pore’s bike-sharing market” (March 22). Bicycle sharing is fast becoming an option to supplement the existing transport system to help it achieve the vision of a car-lite city.

However, indiscriminate parking, poor bicycle and road etiquette, a lack of dedicated cycle paths, et cetera, would undermine the prospects of this good idea.
There must be public education and awareness to parallel the introduction of bicycle sharing here.
A lack of understanding among road users, for instance, would discourage would-be bicycle users, but I do not see commercial operators investing in public education to create an ecosystem that is conducive to this project’s success.
