Public, private institutions can promote local literature

The #BuySingLit movement was sparked by a National Arts Council survey regarding the reading of Singapore literature among residents here (“Worthwhile to reprint SingLit classics”; Feb 10).

Survey findings indicated low awareness of local writers and their works, except for works that are part of the school curriculum or reading assignments.

Our mass media can play a more active and concerted role in highlighting local writers and literature. Another step is for public institutions such as hospitals and polyclinics to get local literature in their waiting areas.

This effort can be expanded to other public or private institutions, such as banks, our airport and entry points into the country, transport hubs, eateries and taxi stands to name a few.

A recent Yale University report stated that book readers live longer than those who do not read. Furthermore, reading local literature builds understanding of our cultures, which can foster better cohesiveness among citizens.
