In the letter “Don’t equate difference in opinions with discrimination” (June 20), the assertion that allowing the Pink Dot event to continue shows that “discrimination does not exist” is flawed.

The writer’s assumption is that because the majority must be prioritised, Singaporeans who belong to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) minority should not get any rights to express their sexuality preference or gender orientation in the first place.

Facebook groups such as “We are against Pinkdot in Singapore” are evidence of divisive factions acting as a resistance to the LGBT community, who is not asking for a change to the Constitution.

Citizens like myself contribute to Singapore’s economy, and the majority can no longer allow our voices to drown in a sea of dissent that does not benefit the country.

LGBT people are here to stay and are prepared to face more quarrels, but I plead with everyone who calls Singapore home to put aside our differences and stay true to our Pledge to “achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for our nation”.
