Race issues: More discussion needed, and from a young age

I believe that teaching children about racial issues and differences from a young age is important and should not be frowned upon especially in Singapore, where potential fault lines exist amid racial differences (Epigram Books founder wants young children to ask about racial differences; Aug 9).

Only by learning about racial issues from a young age can an individual contribute to society while being race-conscious. In our ever-changing work landscape, where interconnectivity has opened doors for us to interact with people of different backgrounds and races, it is important for us to cultivate the habit to be mindful of what we say and do.

Not only that, touching on racial issues from young can also ensure that a child is able to grow up with the appropriate mindset and as an enlightened individual who is able to be sensitive to people from different backgrounds.

The diversity of the social landscape in Singapore has also raised the possibility of conflict breaking out due to racial differences. Only by learning about other races can we ensure racial harmony in Singapore.

I believe that for Singapore to progress amid our multi-religious and multicultural landscape, every individual has to be sensitive to racial differences.

A possible solution could be to open up more discussion platforms in community centres or even discuss racial issues within the comfort of our own homes.

Only with discussions can there be enlightenment. Parents can also play a part in ensuring that their children receive the right moral education by educating them on racial issues so that they are able to develop into sensitive individuals who are able to transcend differences and contribute positively to society.
