Recognise sacrifices made by family caregivers
The Prime Minister’s initiative to recognise our pioneer generation through a special event at the Istana and “a little hongbao” will be well received by those who helped build the nation in its early years of independence.

Just as the pioneer generation has stayed committed to Singapore for decades, so have family caregivers who, through perseverance, have not given up on their care recipients.
Many of these caregivers have, in their employable years, worked with the first-generation leaders to help build a vibrant economy.
Family caregivers should be recognised simply because they make sacrifices to assist loved ones with a disability, physical or mental, serious illness or the limitations of ageing.
In his Chinese New Year message, the PM stressed the importance of family support and caring for the elderly. (“Let’s stick together, PM Lee says in CNY message”; Jan 30, online)
This is exactly what family caregivers have done. It would be timely for the Government to accord them recognition through a hongbao. This group certainly represents an inclusive society.
