Redesigning Orchard Road is not only about the built environment, including the landscape, but also about reinventing the experience to bring back the right crowd, commerce and activities (Add more landscape features to Orchard Rd; April 25).

It includes transforming the experience into a celebration of happiness, excitement and other positive emotions, catering for a wide spectrum of tastes, sights, sounds and aromas, and creating memories through shows and parties that would move spirits.

For example, we should expand busking and upgrade other entertainment to heighten the sense of vibrancy and fun, and also showcase our high-tech capabilities in the process.

Such entertainment includes artificial intelligence toys that combine the best of robotic engineering, augmented and virtual reality, the Internet of Things, drone videography and other services.

As a global city, we can exhibit not only our nation’s beauty but also some of the wonders of the world to our people and foreigners. If our shopping belt, or Singapore for that matter, loses its attraction to foreigners as a place to live, work, study, shop and play, the bright lights may fade out on us on the grand stage in future.
