I refer to the letter “Leaders should continue religion-neutral politics” (Oct 9).

Religion in general teaches people to do good. Our belief systems underpin our actions.

The writer cited examples of global extremism and violence where religion is invoked, but at the heart of these incidents are political-economic interests rather than religion.

Religion should be kept separate from policies but it must respond when the government or society is challenged.

It plays a key role in engaging society, to prevent disorder.

As such, it makes more sense to appreciate the relationship between the Government and religion in fostering a more humane society.

To move forward in these troubling times, Singapore needs good and honest leaders to continue to create policies that are not only inclusive but also humane and nurturing for every Singaporean.
