Retirees, sellers could both benefit from rule change

I agree with the comments Mr Richard Sim made in his letter “Let retirees right-size but keep private property for rental income” (Nov 19).

If the Housing and Development Board (HDB) allowed retirees who own one private property to buy an HDB flat, they could generate some retirement income from renting out their private property while they lived in their flat. This would help them live an independent life and eliminate the need for any reliance on government assistance.

Would this not be a good measure? It would help relieve the situation for those who need to move into their new Executive Condominium or Build-to-Order flats, but are still unable to sell their existing HDB flats in the resale market as required by the HDB.
