Review employment mindset of companies

The commentary “Working to get the labour force ahead of the curve” (Aug 14) puts the onus mainly on workers to retool for the skills needed for the new economy, supposedly in computing, data mining and professional services, among others.

It also talks about the sectoral transformation maps that the Committee on the Future Economy has initiated.

In comparison, less has been said about how companies might transform and improve their operations. Are they adopting technology? Are they valuing the skills above, which the Government has said will provide better employment opportunities?

We must review the employment mindset of companies too, lest we start to put the blame for all unemployment on workers’ obsolete skill sets.
