Revise car park charges to maximise use of parking lots
I hope the ongoing review of public car park charges can correct an existing anomaly.
I hope the ongoing review of public car park charges can correct an existing anomaly.
For the better part of every weekday, from about 9am to 5pm, hundreds of thousands of parking spaces, especially those marked for season parking in public-housing car parks, lie empty. Yet the normal rates apply at these lots.
Such artificial pricing distorts the market and is unhealthy. It drives the wrong behaviour, discouraging people from spreading out usage. A very scarce resource is turned into a white elephant in the day, while unnecessary congestion occurs at other times.
I look forward to a pricing review that will correct this.
