Set up body to review huge medical bills for cases of overcharging

I refer to the report “Fee guidelines among proposals to limit health costs” (Oct 14).

Maybe the Ministry of Health (MOH) should form a regulatory MediShield Life/Integrated Shield committee comprising representatives from the insurers, retired medical practitioners and even foreign medical specialists.

Its role would be to review huge medical bills to ascertain whether these are cases of overcharging.

While the insurers would process claims and payments as per normal, the committee would have the right to ask the medical institution or practitioner to refund the payment if found to have overcharged.

Such cases could also be reported to the MOH to investigate. Should the committee come across patients upgrading to private hospitals, it should look into the reasons.

The MOH can then improve standards. Surely with the above, claims should also be manageable. If there can be property cooling measures, why not for the medical profession too?
