Set up co-operative to help displaced senior PMETs

I agree with the letter “Hiring fallacies adding to displaced PMETs’ woes” (July 19). The problems of our ageing population are stark and looming.

I agree with the letter “Hiring fallacies adding to displaced PMETs’ woes” (July 19). The problems of our ageing population are stark and looming.

Many able-bodied senior professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) have been marginalised and remain unemployed, when they could contribute positively to the economy and regain self-respect for many more years.

We need a paradigm shift in mindsets to turn this problem on its head and create win-win outcomes.

I suggest that government agencies, corporate Singapore and senior professionals forge a new tripartite seniors co-operative to tap the 55-plus age group, drive its membership to have a stake in it and cater for their needs.

First, in terms of retirement and employment needs, there should be active matching of job requirements to the preferences of senior PMETs, for lower-level jobs at a slower pace and lower pay.

There could be hand-holding to ensure at least that the senior PMETs get to the interview stage for any job if they meet the requirements.

Suitable senior PMETs, even without the relevant experience, could first be recruited, then placed on a traineeship to prepare them for the job.

Second, educational exchanges in all aspects affecting seniors could be provided for members. Meaningful activities could be organised to engage seniors. Here, the experience and expertise of senior professionals could be tapped.

Third, there could be tie-ups with corporations to provide goods and services for members at preferential rates. Many businesses would be keen to penetrate this growing market segment.

Finally, seniors should be valued in their golden years and age with dignity. Members could stay engaged with the community and the latest marketplace developments.

They could also share in the fruits of the co-operative.

I am confident this idea can be viable and achieved if we put our minds to it. The possibilities defy imagination. Singapore is known for many firsts, so let us be the first to develop a thriving seniors economy.
