Show some C.A.R.E. to stop animal cruelty

Animals need love and care, and everyone has a part to play in reducing animal cruelty and making Singapore a more compassionate city (“New animal welfare codes hopes to raise animal welfare standards: AVA”; Aug 11, online).

Animals need love and care, and everyone has a part to play in reducing animal cruelty and making Singapore a more compassionate city (“New animal welfare codes hopes to raise animal welfare standards: AVA”; Aug 11, online).

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore reported previously that there were 91 alleged cat cruelty cases last year. I feel that compassion for animals has gone down, and there is a need for more public awareness of animal cruelty.

Individuals can help to make life better for animals through what I call C.A.R.E:

— Calling the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or the police if they see an animal in danger or in need of help.

— Adopting one if they want to keep a pet.

— Registering as a volunteer with organisations such as the SPCA and Causes for Animals Singapore.

— Empathising with and showing some attention to animals in their neighbourhood.

To quote the Dalai Lama, “our prime purpose in this life is to help others, and if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them”. If everyone does his or her part, animals here will have a better environment.
