Singapore expensive? Think again

I refer to the report “S’pore ranked world’s most expensive city for 3rd year running” (March 11).

I would suggest that the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) raters live in the real Singapore for a while, and not loll about at condominium pools, eat at fancy restaurants and insist on driving expensive cars.

I have lived here for 15 years — and in many major Western cities — and still think it is one of the best places in which to live. I am convinced Singapore has the best value for public transport, the tastiest chicken rice and beef rendang, the most accessible parks and the most helpful public services.

But in a way, I am glad the EIU got it wrong. With luck, it will discourage more foreigners from coming here and clogging things up for those of us who appreciate the special advantages Singapore has to offer.
