Singapore should chip in for Green Climate Fund

In “With US out of climate pact, others have to do more with less: DPM Teo” (June 6), there is a question of whether Singapore will contribute to the United Nations’ Green Climate Fund.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean appears to be saying that developed economies that had already emitted carbon dioxide into the atmosphere should be responsible for contributing and helping developing economies progress in a greener manner.

I would think Singapore is a developed economy, and while our contribution to historical carbon emissions might not have been large, neither would it have been inconsequential.

We need not make large contributions in absolute or per capita terms, as Sweden and Norway have — at over US$50 (S$69) per capita — but even Indonesia has pledged US$250,000.
