SMRT’s leaders did not shirk their responsibilities

We have read from social media and TODAY’s Voices page that readers were unhappy that the maintenance division at Bishan MRT Station was blamed for the transport company’s failure to keep the system in good condition (“Disappointing that maintenance team at SMRT took the blame” and “Sad to see maintenance team being blamed”; Oct 17).

We have read from social media and TODAY’s Voices page that readers were unhappy that the maintenance division at Bishan MRT Station was blamed for the transport company’s failure to keep the system in good condition (“Disappointing that maintenance team at SMRT took the blame” and “Sad to see maintenance team being blamed”; Oct 17).

It is in every culture of a company or big corporation that an analysis be done when a process or system fails or when fault arises. Eventually, a division has to be held accountable for the failure. This is inevitable.

SMRT’s top management, as I see it, has not shirked or pushed their responsibilities to their lower-level staff members.

The leaders admitted their fault and they went one step further to pinpoint the division in their company as the one responsible for the incident.

They are trying to be transparent to the public, which is in line with what the public has asked for from the authorities.

Have they been too “transparent” now, and we are upset and blaming the top management for this?
