S’pore failing where public transport is concerned

I read “Key lessons from London’s bus services” (June 23) with much interest.

I have never been to London, but my niece has. She returned from a trip there last December with compliments on the city’s bus service. She had missed a bus on her first day there but, to her pleasant surprise, the next came after a very short interval.

Most buses in London keep to their schedules, allowing commuters to plan their day efficiently.

I agree with the article that routes taken by buses in Singapore cover long distances — not only for main services, but feeder services as well.

Feeder services are inefficient because almost all make loops. Commuters are also not offered alternative bus services. Only one feeder service operates in my neighbourhood, leaving those of us living in the area at its mercy.

Singapore wants to excel in every field, but where public transportation is concerned, we are failing rather badly.
